This cute autumnal (that is my new word) decoration arrived on Tuesday from Mama Pea along with a recipe I requested. Loving the cute little burlap sack decorated with a sweet pumpkin square. Recipe for Mexican Beer Chowder yet to be tested but will give review when I do.<br />
<br />
What does this have to do with the post title? Not much but the days before and after it are so very Susan. Such as full, catalytic, more in a day than hours are you getting it? Well Susan I love you and you wear it well but you can keep it. lol<br />
<br />
It all began when I offered to organize a "Alpaca to Shawl" for the demo at Arapaho Rose <a href="http://www.arapahorosealpacas.com/" target="_blank">http://www.arapahorosealpacas.com/</a> and then came the first of the month plus new chickens , barn cleaning and new "flannel sheets" for all. SOP in addition during all this and I am making a slow recovery of a case too much in one little package.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AEtdSSHkjCo/W7VI_WmS5oI/AAAAAAAAEag/TwAFKwHtK6E8QSttPk41YjGEeazcXzjeACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4575.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1218" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AEtdSSHkjCo/W7VI_WmS5oI/AAAAAAAAEag/TwAFKwHtK6E8QSttPk41YjGEeazcXzjeACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4575.JPG" width="243" /></a></div>
Here is the result of the alpaca to shawl. Hanging nicely on a display in the shop at Arapaho Rose. It is all alpaca , can you say "oh so soft" and was woven on a Baby Wolf loom for those interested.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zodigvU8RSg/W7VKh4FeF1I/AAAAAAAAEas/-B17f_Su6dYMsFAf6pkOPnA3XzheCFMHgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4550.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zodigvU8RSg/W7VKh4FeF1I/AAAAAAAAEas/-B17f_Su6dYMsFAf6pkOPnA3XzheCFMHgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4550.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the Fiber Studio. It is where we meet once monthly for spinning and workshops. I love the signage that Karen added just in time for Alpaca Farm Days. It is by the way a national event the last Saturday/Sunday of the month of September. Check your area for a local farm near you.<br />

We had a wonderful time and the attendance for this event went from 600 hundred last year to 2000 this year! We must being doing something right. But this is Karen's brain child and check out her website link to learn more about the herd and Karen. Plus enjoy a lot of photo's of the days activities.<br />

On Sunday I loaded up the extra large kitty crate and drove to a friends (Ash above the bobbin winder) to pick up two 8 month old Red Sex Link pullets who are laying. Yippie!! I have no photos yet (baddddd chicken mama) but they are lovely and healthy and already four days later , comfortable and giving me eggs. Then after getting back home from a lengthy visit I went to therapy.<br />
<br />
Cheap therapy. I pulled out my Schacht Matchless wheel and spun myself just about comatose before it was feeding time and end of the day chores. Boy did I benefit from that ! If I had been born before my time I would have been a production spinner. So stealing away some time is cheaper than a therapist and releases endorphins so I go to my happiest of places. Well except for being with the goats, the Pyrs, the cats, the house dogs . Perhaps I am happier than I thought ;-)<br />
<br />
Monday , Monday how loaded that day. Yikes a first of the month trip to Redding always means a really long day. And it rained a bit too. But I got 'er done and was back home by four in the P.M. Got things organized and out the door by four forty five diving into evening chores. I slept really well that night.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Tuesday dawned with some unexpected rain showers. By the time it was over I was a bit damp but loving it. Enjoying coffee and a phone call visit with my bestie cowlady aka Janet who <strike>lives</strike> lived :-(<br />
at the Armstrong Holiday ranch across the street. She and her cowboy retired and moved to Winnemucca ,NV. By the time the visit was done the skies had cleared to lots of big , billowy clouds and blue sky.<br />
<br />
So I made a trip to the feed stores. Picked up chicken feed, grain for my milker and the bucks. I supplement the buck boys with about a 4 ounce ration of 14% Organic all purpose when they are in rut.Reason? They park their brains (between their ears) on a fence post and their appetite takes a nose dive. Even that small amount helps Longfellow who is 9 years now keep a decent weight through the rut season.<br />
<br />
The next stop was for straw, shavings and the lovely first cutting alfalfa mountain hay you see above. It makes my entire barn smell like, well, new mowed alfalfa. Fine, leafy and they eat it all down to the bottom of the bunk. Except for the bucks who look at and go back to pacing the fence line because a doe was on the other side about four feet away. Like I said their "brains" not the ones referred to above the pair a bit lower than that rule the brain between their ears. So they stare at it once in awhile but by the next morning it too has disappeared.<br />
<br />
Wednesday was a mix of showers and sun. When the showers stopped I dashed out turned out the does in the west barn and commenced to clean and put down the "flannel sheets". First after cleaning a fine layer of zeolite, then another fine layer of DE , a thicker layer of shavings and lastly a bale and one of half of straw. This combination makes a good base for wintering over and adding straw when needed. We have porous soil so the zeolite and DE (diatomaceous earth) adds a hand in keeping it dry and also keeping odor at bay. I do what is called deep bedding which translates to I don't clean until Spring or when weather becomes warm and dry . I just continue to add straw and as time goes on it begins to compost itself and adds a bit of heat to the barn which adds a measure of comfort on the December through March days that are quite cold , wet and on occasion snowy.<br />

I was super happy to have gotten the whole process including moving the feeder bunk in the above photo into the barn after a summer of feeding outdoors in about 4 hours total including a few "honey do's" for me along the way. I haven't gotten any photos today with the crew inside but they all looked happy this morning. Now only the big barn, buck barn and chicken coop to go.</div>

So there you have it my week that was. I will admit that despite the title I will never be able to keep up Susan as I require at least seven hours of sleep to appear remotely human the next day. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This photo has no significance to anything other than I like it. Well wait maybe it does as we are looking rain in the face. It is supposed to begin on Sunday and potentially go through to Tuesday or Wednesday. Not a lot but enough to settle the dust for which both I and my abused sinuses will be thankful. Trust me living on 42 acres with the wind blowing isn't pretty. Also the temperatures are dropping down again and hopefully they will stick. There is nothing pretty about 93 degrees in September even for a life long California girl. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With that said this post is just what it says. Life has gone into high gear again. Loosely translated means I somehow forgot where my "no but thanks I can't do that" button is. And I have managed to commit myself to be overly committed. It in reality began last weekend and will go through the first part of next week. Why? Because next week is the beginning of another month. "What "cries the crowd "how can that be ?" 😱</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So until I wind my through this <strike>mess</strike> obligation my mouth got me into and the first one to two days of October I <strike>will</strike> may go underground. I owe a couple of blog friends emails and find myself reading but not commenting on other blogs. I have tried to correct much of that this morning. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until then I bid you adieu . Unless I get a rush of energy and time at the same point. Good grief all these variables!!</div>

<br />
The first night that Flame was out with Mama they ended up sleeping in the original Chick hotel since Flame couldn't mange to get airborne high enough to join Mama on the big chicken roost. Well the second night mind you I walked in there they were. Snug as two bugs in a rug and I do believe I saw a degree from the aeronautics division of avian sciences tucked under Flame's left wing.<br />
<br />
And then last night I went out to say goodnight to everyone and give treats to goats and dogs and yes chickens. Good grief I spoil this crew! I couldn't find Flame I could hear her but couldn't find her. "Flame " I called and I hear "peep,peep,peep." Then again and again with increased concern as I scoured the coop I would holler again and get back another "peep,peep,peep." Mama and Flame had been excavating a few inches deep area in the front of the coop that afternoon so I am thinking "Darn chick thinks it is Indiana Jones!" But I knew Mama was up on the roosting bar by her sisters and then it dawned on me. She did look a bit rounder than usual I took a look from the bottom, nothing. First the right side and then the left. Mama you are really poofing out those wing feathers. I looked down to the roosting bar . Very very suspicious "Mama hen your left wing has sprouted feet." Just then she ruffled her wing feathers and out walked Flame. I laughed hard at them " Mama you are just like Mother Ginger in the Nutcracker ballet." <br />

Today in the early morning sun Mama hen and Flame were back at it. A scratching lesson again today. It has been fun watching them When I toss grains and veggie clippings to them it is interesting watching Mama chat at Flame incessantly in explanation as she picks up a piece of lettuce and drops it at Flame's feet and showing her again how to pick it up. I bet Mama hen sleeps well at night. If you can't see Flame enlarge the photo and look on the outside of the fence to the right(your visual right) of the T post. Where else would that <strike>sweet little chick </strike> trouble maker be but on the wrong side of the fence. She needs to put on a few pounds! I have watched her drive Mama to distraction running in and out of the no climb fencing. But she always comes back.<br />

Welcome to my garlic bed of 2018 . OK then in progress but one has to start somewhere right?The red flowered plants to in the front left above are a gift from my nursery fiber friend Pam. They are a great butterfly/honey bee and hummer attractant. They were also volunteers this year and I just love them. They will stay until winter calls them home. If you remember correctly this was the sunflower bed of this summer. If not here is a refresher.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PPiQPPGP1N4/W1JQB9YKw7I/AAAAAAAAEFI/AaumV8ebO-wERYV_ywIC4sL1nDoVWBK1QCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4051%2B%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1152" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PPiQPPGP1N4/W1JQB9YKw7I/AAAAAAAAEFI/AaumV8ebO-wERYV_ywIC4sL1nDoVWBK1QCPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_4051%2B%25282%2529.JPG" width="230" /></a></div>
So today I got busy and turned the soil, got rid of the last of the sunflower roots and mixed in some well aged barn cleanings and a few other goodies and watered it amply. That is Rose to the rear a 4 year old rosemary bush that began very small and loves where it lives. The artichoke plants outlived the area and the asparagus was a challenge but Rose is dependable and the hummers, honeybees and butterflies love her . I do also especially in soft goat cheese I make.<br />
<br />

<br />
What else got accomplished this day before one o'clock? I cleaned out the green house to the bones. It was in a terrible state of disarray. I had in fact been dreading the task. I wasn't planning on doing it today but the day is so cool only now at almost three in the afternoon has it reached 80 degrees with a wonderful breeze. And I wasn't looking forward to doing it in warmer weather so I jumped in and got 'er done. Of course no camera in this unplanned venture but I got it all out and will be rearranging things and adding new within the next few weeks. I need to get my salad greens going like yesterday 🙀 I will get some photos as it progresses over time.<br />
<br />
<br />
Wishing all those experiencing inclement, nasty and downright life threatening weather on the other coast prayers of peace and safety. Perhaps we will all see a calm winter with weather that brings a prosperous Spring for our gardens . I am looking forward to waking to more calm, cool skies as we had yesterday .<br />

Remember Flame? Flame was laid in the coop just as the Carr fire was getting going. There were two other eggs that her mama produced after laying the first. As I said foolish woman I was I failed to mark the eggs as we used to in years gone by. So imagine my surprise when I found two more (a total of 5) eggs in the nest. Since it was about a weeks difference I simply calculated a five day difference in hatching and hoped she would keep them warm.<br />
<br />
Well the twenty-first of August I went out to check the nest and low and behold above is what I found. At that point there were only two other eggs left in the nest and she was keeping them warm. But of course she was nesting in a nesting box that was not a good place for a small chick. No food, no water and about three feet off the ground. So I made a safe place for them and moved everyone including the last two eggs. Worked well but the more active Flame became the more Mama was up and running. Finally on an egg check just before the last hatch date an egg was accidentally broken.Luckily it was an old egg no chick and most lucky because it didn't smell. Nothing like a rotten egg.😷 Then a few days later Mama was done and the last remaining egg was fairly cold. Lucky another not viable egg. Not that I am fond of bad eggs but I would have felt bad if a viable chick died due to my lack of egg marking. I know livestock = dead stock but still 😪<br />
<br />
So here we are almost a month later and Flame is a very precocious single chick. She has learned her Mama lessons well. She can roost about a foot off the ground, scratch with the best of them and steals grape treats from her Mama. And mercy me she is a big girl now!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kJ-qV1K80HY/W5qub09k-jI/AAAAAAAAETo/OtZPONwsgjkMhW4-7fph-mleOocHqb5RACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1208" data-original-width="1600" height="241" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kJ-qV1K80HY/W5qub09k-jI/AAAAAAAAETo/OtZPONwsgjkMhW4-7fph-mleOocHqb5RACPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_4364.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I took down all the road blocks and put extra steps on the big waterer and feeder. I took the water out of their pen and left the hanging feeder and during the day I open the door so them can go exploring but dash back to home if needed or desired. So far the hens have pretty much ignored them. Mr . Paul Newman was snippy with Mama hen but just gave Flame the eyeball. To which I reminded him he is part of the equation in all this. Flame is sporting all her secondary feathers and has really long legs perhaps Papa's side of the family?<br />
<br />

<br />
I went out last night to check on everyone only to hear Flame cheeping like crazy. Mama was up about three feet on a roosting board with her two sisters. Little Flame couldn't make the jump yet.Mama kept encouraging her and Flame keep peeping frantically "I can't Mama I can't." So I snagged Flame and with the other hand grabbed Mama set her on the ground cared Flame over to the baby pen and deposited her , scooted Mama in gently with a foot . I then added a small waterer and closed the panel. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh the sounds of silence.<br />
<br />
I was unsure of how the first day out would be but I had kept the little pen mostly intact assuming the moving chicks and hens is like moving goats around. Rule number one NEVER NEVER NEVER TAKE DOWN OLD PEN UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THE NEW ACCOMMODATIONS WORK! <br />
So Mama and Flame will continue to spend nights in the safe pen and the days exploring.<br />

If you need it a clue. It is green has leaves and a stem ? Indeed another "matoe" as my second oldest grandgirl called them as a toddler. Always wanting when she visited us "Grandpa's matoe Gammie?"<br />
This one is on the Celebrity .<br />

And if that weren't enough to make this girl's heart go pitter patter on the Shady Lady next door to the Celebrity what do I spy? Not one but two "matoe's" the one in front and a smaller one behind it a bit to the left.<br />
<br />
Just a quick post now out to do chores and milk. More post to follow on Flame and Mama Hen's big day out soon!<br />

I am known for my dark humor. I have always figured my dark humor developed because of my fairly short but much loved professional time as a veterinary technician. I have know many folks in professions that deal with people, animals and death plus everything in between. I am a firm believer that one needs to place boundaries to survive in those professions. With that said I found considering the situation in Shasta county this summer the signage (especially the top part) amusing. For those older folks with poor eye sight just click to enlarge.<br />

Wowzers! A feed store I frequent has a meet the vendors day and a huge raffle every first full weekend in September. It has evolved over the first few years that in interest of keeping the raffle under two or three <strike>days </strike> hours that one is present when the drawing is conducted. Guess who won a goodie bag. It has lots of dog, cat and bling type things. What doesn't get used at the farm will be gifted to someone who needs it. There was also a gift certificate for a large bag of grain free (Taste of The Wild) dog food. That will find a home also. Ok I must confess I had my eye on the 5 bales of shavings and 20 bales of alfalfa but I will be happy to leave with more than I came with . <strike>NO WHINING!</strike><br />

Today was a first in awhile for two events. Note the Shingletown Ridge above the tree line where it is <strike>foggy</strike> smokey. This is the first day in a long while we have had smoke so thick at our place. I have checked multiple times today for Cal Fire updates. None, nada. Well that is a good thing so the wind much have really shifted as when I woke up this morning all I could smell was burning grass and that had me worried.<br />
<br />
The second event hadn't occurred in this kitchen since early June. We have here ladies and gents a rising loaf of sourdough bread. I have missed my bread . Mostly because I love bread baking and secondly because I bake a nice product. I hate to toot my own horn but I will!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mckf1opZ7CE/W5bo7IdJ4CI/AAAAAAAAERk/W-a9VGn86UglCNCF_ell1O4zZasoiehQgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_4348.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mckf1opZ7CE/W5bo7IdJ4CI/AAAAAAAAERk/W-a9VGn86UglCNCF_ell1O4zZasoiehQgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_4348.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a 24 hour project in all. Fermentation can't and shouldn't be hurried. I mix the sourdough starter , flour and water to let stand covered for 5 hours. Then I put the whole deal in the fridge to get that sourdough bite everyone loves. So what is that? Per King Arthur flour it is as follows:<br />
<span style="background-color: yellow;">A combination of lactic and acetic acids, created as the dough rises and ferments. Refrigerating the dough encourages the production of more acetic than lactic acid: and acetic acid is much the tangier of the two. Thus, sourdough bread that is refrigerated before baking will have a more assertive sour flavor.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I have used a recipe of King Arthur flour for years. I use my own starter passed down to me from Janet who lived across the way on the cattle ranch. I use my own blend of flour but I like this recipe the best because the comment is "wow this is sourdough!" A nice firm outer crust but a firm soft (yes a bit of both) inner with lots of those air pockets but not holes we are used to seeing in good sourdough loaves.</span><br />

The lady above is Allison. She is setting up her supplies for a round of bobbin lace making at the 37th Jubilee for the Tehama county historical society. The loom to her left is the same one pictured below. It is the loom the shawl was woven on in our just for fun Sheep to Shawl event. But back to Allison. She hopped in her vehicle and came down from Lakehead to join us. Impressive? Well yeah it is a good 2 hour drive but Allison didn't need to worry about traffic she was the traffic. You see Allison and her hubby live within three miles of the Hirz fire. And after the Delta fire started that has totally cleared north/south traffic for 10 miles it made Allison the only girl at the <strike>dance</strike> 'er freeway. Since she is below the Delta fire and was going south she had I5 all to herself until she reached the southern blockade. Allison is a British girl here by marriage. She is gutsy , old enough to not care and takes calculated chances. She regaled us in her dry British wit with fire stores and we laughed and she did too. Good hard belly laughs that friends do together when the danger is near but we are strong country women who are old enough to have seen enough to know laughter with friends is stronger the whatever these fires can throw at us. Then later in the afternoon Allison drove home clear sailing. Gods speed.<br />

The beginning of the shawl in plain weave on a 8 dent reed. The plying of the multicolored singles creates the pattern. It is a good representation of what I have talked about before. Letting your yarn do the pattern not the pattern bling the yarn.<br />

This is Colleen the weaver. Marching down the row of spinners. I am far to the left out of sight. The sweet lady last in the line is Patty she was our ply spinner spent her day collecting our singles from our bobbins and plying them two ply (twisting two single strands of yarn together) and putting them on bobbins <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

for Colleen to work her magic with the shuttle. And yes you can shoot me now but I had to leave before the shawl was cut off the loom. But I will get a photo of it. The shawl was to be donated to the Tehama County Historical Society to raffle off for some needed income to further their cause.<br />
<br />
That is it folks for now. The end of the week I will be back if not before with a post about Flame's big day. She is almost a month old and Friday Flame and her Mama Hen get released into the flock. She is much larger than her last photo and wiser. She is roosting and stealing grape snacks from her Mama. So I shall gets photos and post them up for you all to enjoy.<br />

Here is a link for anyone interested. From where I stand the Mrecury has done some excellent reporting. At this point there are three small communities potentially in the direct path of this fire. If this one does what the Carr fire did this could become beyond awful for many. I will post again with other goings on unrelated to the fires.<br />

I mentioned that there would be an update on this fellow. I am using the same photo from the original post to share with you all that he has Shingles of the optic nerve. I will not use another photo until I get one that reflects him in a better light, um, so to speak. He sorta looks like the Walking Dead at the moment, poor guy.<br />
<br />
To recap here is what our friends on the internet have to say about this<br />
<a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/eye-health/shingles-in-the-eye" target="_blank">https://www.healthline.com/health/eye-health/shingles-in-the-eye</a><br />
<br />
We are at roughly week 8 , week 7 if you are counting only visits after the first visit with the O.D. and subsequent visits with the ophthalmologist. However it was somewhere between week 1 to 2 that he began having symptoms but did share them until week 2. Whatever ;-0 I don't believe I posted the last visit with the ophthalmologist which resulted in his not needing to have the eyelids on the left eye sutured together for a month. As they began to open and close helping decrease the dry eye syndrome on its own. However on the week 6 visit he was given a new drop prescription as he had an increase in the pressure of the inneroccular area and the attending ophthalmologist referred him to see the specialist in the group dealing with that after a week on the drops.<br />
<br />
Well ( I know Susan a new paragraph ) today was that visit. The take home from it was the pressure is decreasing (thankful) and the news this week is as follows. Keep using the new drops but decrease to twice daily from four times daily. And that the doctor is concerned that the nerve damage to the left top eyelid may be permanent. That is something that only time will tell. Still with us is the relentless discomfort, sensitivity to light , somewhat elevated pressure in eye (but danger of permanently distorting or explosion of eye is less) and lastly unbearable fatigue.<br />
<br />
The good news is he began walking the English and BC / Aussie two days ago. The bad news is that is all he can do for now still remaining horizontal in pain most of every 24 hours. The good news is he is not hard to find. The bad news is the firewood needs another couple of cords or more for winter. The worse news is I may end up learning how to use a maul and sledge hammer. In which case I may end up horizontal also. But the upside is "country girls can." Stay tuned as he has graduated to biweekly appointments so another installment can be expected in two weeks.<br />

I have kept this undercover as the outcome was uncertain. In the beginning there were three eggs. Then apparently Mama Hen went for a food and water break and someone deposited two more eggs. Fool that I was I never marked the original three so I now had to keep them all. Mama Buff Orpington obliged me so we were off to the races. The original plan was if there were three they would be named Snap, Crackle and Pop since they were laid during the Carr fire. In the end there was only one that hatched she is cute , red , takes after Mom and her name is Flame. Flame </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Recap about six weeks ago we began having issues when running the generator. We have 12 panels mounted on a stand alone but they each produce<b> 75</b> amps each. The woman who built our home in 2001 did a great job for what she did when she did it but now here we are 17 years later. We had planned on upgrading but cancer got in the way. So now we realized that it was beyond a desire but a get 'er done item or regret it. So we pulled up our big girl and boy undies and bit the bullet. We added these six panels on the easterly facing side of the solar/pump house. They are<strike> 150</strike><b> 310</b> amp producing each panel . Taking us from <b>900 </b>amps total to <strike>1800 </strike> <b>2,760</b> amps. If I have my amp production correct . May need to check that with the head solar engineer when he finishes his nap. At any rate we have at least doubled it if not more. If I find I am wrong and I think I may be since I think it is closer to 2400 amp but not sure why. I will post a correction in the comment section when I know. </div>

you can see the stand alone in this photo and it is facing almost completely straight up for maximum exposure at that time of the year. Wish I had a better one but it seems I spend my life cut it out of blog photos from that angle. But you get the idea.</div>

I don't have any photos of the original batteries. I spend most of yesterday trying to stay out of Ryan and Jack's way as they swapped out the 15 smaller batteries that needed replacing and inserted the two ginormous batteries you see below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sauQir_AeyI/W4IIvPJpSnI/AAAAAAAAEN8/hJAOmG__adgvfDZ-4CbtUpmaKRFMkOVAgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_4246.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sauQir_AeyI/W4IIvPJpSnI/AAAAAAAAEN8/hJAOmG__adgvfDZ-4CbtUpmaKRFMkOVAgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_4246.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

And the ultimate work horse when the winter weather creeps in and we need a bit of help. It is a propane generator. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oOfT22vwW6I/W4IIs9P9GJI/AAAAAAAAEN0/jxlV6IrYKs0kaYjlQhj0G6Bz4rTDr4sHACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_4244.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oOfT22vwW6I/W4IIs9P9GJI/AAAAAAAAEN0/jxlV6IrYKs0kaYjlQhj0G6Bz4rTDr4sHACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_4244.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And sharing the room with the batteries and the invertors etc is our pump unit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jsPgp3h5iXo/W4II0K1GNzI/AAAAAAAAEOI/l6a5CRoKSkEr9L3uo1OpKBRftZasdHYBQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_4250%2B%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jsPgp3h5iXo/W4II0K1GNzI/AAAAAAAAEOI/l6a5CRoKSkEr9L3uo1OpKBRftZasdHYBQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_4250%2B%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Ultimately what we have done is doubled or more than doubled our production and put ourselves in a position that we should not have to run our generator until winter sets in. Of course this not being a perfect world we may find ourselves in a fix of some sort or the other that requires it. But in theory we have enough back up to go several days without running it on days that we get a minimal amount of sun.<br />
<br />
And to answer your question that is dancing in your heads yes it was an investment. But our money with lots of 0's in it bought us two batteries with a shelf life of 7 - 10 years for not a lot more than the smaller ones with a replacement life of 5 years. Plus the six new panels and a few technical items on the smaller side like the fan that cools the battery storage area and all the labor to get this done. It will increase the equity in our property for interested parties . No we aren't planning on moving but anything that increases your equity is a good thing.<br />
<br />
So we have a new chicklet and a new system. We lived through 6 weeks during a lot of 100 degree plus temps with inversion layers from the Carr fire without a cooler or having "regular" lights at night because we were limping along with the system. We both spent over a week sleeping outside me on the deck Geoffrey on a chase lounge in the front porch area. It was too warm to sleep inside on the bed as without the swamp cooler to blow out the warm air left,even with shutting all the windows before the temperature began it's climb at 8 AM , a warm icky house so why bother? Just camp out. And we survived the stress, strain and worry over and about the fires around us and the potential of becoming part of the equation.<br />
<br />
So what else? I posted a bit back about the onset of shingles in Geoffrey's left optic nerve. We are now 6 weeks out and three appointments once a week with the ophthalmologist. On his last appointment the Dr. was very concerned over the fact that the nerve damage at this point prevents him from blinking . Therefore his eye is very dry and even more excruciatingly painful. So with that said if he still has no blink when he goes in for visit number four this coming week he is intending to schedule an appointment for him to have the lid's of his left eye sutured together for a month to see if that will help resolve the situation. I cannot say enough about how horribly painful this condition is and how many issues from it can become permanent. I will never negate how painful and potentially complicated any case of shingles can be. However this has to be the mother of all . I am very concerned for his well being and what may become a permanent part of our lives.<br />
<br />
I don't like to express my concerns too much publicly as many of you know but please if you should ever have symptoms of a continually on going headache behind one eye that don't match up in the stroke category please get yourself seen asap. Anything with the eyes moves quickly and has the potential to steal your vision. It is nothing to put off or delay . Better to go in and be seen to find nothing serious then to delay. Geoffrey was seen a week after his first symptoms he tends to be prudent and forgive my gender discrimination he is a man and men in general tend to think of all the simple explanations to my knowledge. A delay of a few days can put you behind the eight ball with the optic shingles.<br />
<br />
A bit of cheer to end with . Since I am getting a nice amount of milk from Little Trouble I made Feta!<br />

It is currently ready to be put into a brine and left to age to perfection! I am very excited to be back in the home dairy arena . Tonight I am making a batch of yogurt . I have forgotten how much fun this is and how nice it is to once again have some home made goodness! <br />

Thanks for taking your time to check in on us at Walnetto Farm and have a wonderful pre Fall weekend!<br />

This one is a Celebrity and tada! I <strike>have</strike> had a tomato. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These two were on the get 'em while they last for $2.50 each cash and carry. I had wandered into one of my favorite nurseries on Wednesday. I hadn't meant to but I went past it on my way home and figured what the what let's go! So I did. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was on the hunt for a little something to put the perk back in my pear and apple trees. You may remember from a couple post back with all the smoke and particulates in the air those two who were perfectly lovely only a few weeks ago are doing their best modern dance interpretation of "tree in pose of death". Ugh! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I walked out of Gold Leaf nursery with a 4 ounce bottle of Superthrive and two bargain tomato plants. I am usually pretty picky about what I put into my soil and plants but everyone I know at the nursery is nuts about this stuff. I figured that it will go on two trees who went from healthy to half gone in a short amount of time and I have tried everything else . Factor in that both of the trees are in a basin of their own planted at least 4 feet away from anything else. We are safe just in case when I start reading the fine print on the bottle and internet and I slap myself silly for buying it. Basically they are going to die so why not try every thing with in reason? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h8DXDpsQZ_8/W3h_E2DuW9I/AAAAAAAAELg/MUZTR_hVYow_twSEqYCk0MWQAOjfR_xvwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_4098.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h8DXDpsQZ_8/W3h_E2DuW9I/AAAAAAAAELg/MUZTR_hVYow_twSEqYCk0MWQAOjfR_xvwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_4098.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">This is Agatha Apple. She still has green in her bark but her "hair" looks pretty sad. :-(</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">and yes I name my plants doesn't everyone?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">So back to the tomatoes. I figured since last year I nursed a tomato plant through until November and harvested fruit I may do the same with these two. The most that can happen is I am successful and my green house will have two occupants when the temperatures drop and I will have tomato's. The worse that will happen they won't and I will have bought two very pricey tomato's . But there is also the BLT factor.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_wAnPRpan1Q/W3ZR_cazsbI/AAAAAAAAELQ/4D64GoeuHx0nCs7YzfPMndgHf0spLZWBQCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4188.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_wAnPRpan1Q/W3ZR_cazsbI/AAAAAAAAELQ/4D64GoeuHx0nCs7YzfPMndgHf0spLZWBQCPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_4188.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I wait all winter for the first BLT of summer with our tomatoes. For the last 6 years that hasn't happened . I either went BLT less or bought a Farmers Market tomato. Now don't get me wrong but it just isn't the same. There is nothing like plucking a sun kissed tomato and pairing it with the lettuce,bacon and I also enjoy avocado on occasion . So I took the plunge on Wednesday evening and walked out on the deck lovingly caressed the small but ample and ripe Celebrity plucking her from the vine. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">The scent was pure ambrosia that only to be found in the garden in August. While slicing it the aroma drifted upwards and I was transported to summers before when the children were little's and Geoffrey would pay them a penny a piece for each squashy fat tomato worm they retrieved and stomped. Then I gingerly spread the sour dough bread (lightly toasted) with mayonnaise , oh the indulgence! </span><span style="text-align: left;">Smoshed some avocado on the mayo, placed the slices of tomato on the avocado, placed the slices of bacon gently on the the tomato slices , topping them with red lettuce and lastly the other slice of bread.</span><span style="text-align: left;">I then sliced up the middle and plated with some kettle chips . Those are another infrequent indulgence but darn it a girl needs to have fun! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Then I found myself in a quandary of semantics. Can I honestly say that I had a delicious BLT with a summer tomato from my garden? Is possession really 9/10 of the law? Or am I just a lying opportunist who bought her way to gardening rights by being in the right place at the right time? </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I don't think that this the view I would get today with the Carr fire still with us but hopeful that perhaps it will happen soon. It is finally getting better daily at our place up the mountain. And if I had a camera with me when I went to the barn today chances are good this is what we would see. Sherman really enjoys his daily multiple naps as does his partner in guarding Yarrow. In fact he just about has it down to a science. When you are up often at night strongly suggesting that the bad guys "just keep moving" it frees up days for a good nap with one eye open.<br />

Stay with me on this multifaceted post. Yes that is blue skies taken yesterday afternoon and enjoy it when you can cause as of now it is smokey skies again. And we had stars last night in the weeks since the Carr fire began I remember seeing stars on only three nights. There may have been more that I saw but forgot when I spent my nights sleeping on the deck because of the issues with our off grid solar unit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As of 7 AM today the Carr fire checked in at 186,416 acres with 55% containment. There is also a lot ouuing and aweing over little Miss Carr a black bear cub read about her here</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The new kid on the block is the Hat fire. It is about one and one half hours up the mountain to the NE of us. It was started (I use that term as right now the scuttlebutt is lite intentionally ) on Thursday late afternoon and is currently per Cal Fire info of 7AM today 1,900 acres and 25% contained. </div>

Ok fire stuff over for today. On Thursday I took a much needed off the property to the hamlet of Mineral. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral,_California" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral,_California</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A fiber friend has a designated camping spot up there all summer . She spends 5 days a week there and the weekend at the house on the valley floor. A great get away from the heat retreat. So she invited some of the ladies up for a fiber day in forest. The photos below were taken on my drive up. Intentions were honorable to take photos of the gathering but did I? Oh heck no found myself so into spinning , visiting and just relaxing (can we say "breath") I never got a one.</div>

This chimney on Lane Valley Road is all that is left of an old homestead perhaps. The left side of the chimney has a very wide substantial opening that leads one to think it was in the kitchen of a large ranch house and was used for cooking and heating. Or perhaps in the main room and used for both. </div>

This ample Black Angus bull and the Hereford blue with the very to standard horn set (they have been tipped at the ends for cowdog and cowboy safety. Also for less damage to be done in a "boy fight " ) and the cute curly do on his forehead were both hanging out grazing with the boys. They were also eyeballing the heifers across the street. ;-)</div>

The first three of the new , larger solar panels are in place before I left to run errands yesterday.<br />
<br />
When I returned about 5 hours later this is what I found. Much to my delight! However we still have to have the industrial size batteries arrive get these panels on the system all the wiring is now in place. The older panels on the stand alone are all tested out in good working order so we have 12 smaller panels 75 amps each and these six which are the new are 150 amps each which will give us a total of 2500 amps in the end. I am hopeful we will be back on line by the end of next week at the latest. It will be wonderful to have the cooler and lights up and running. We have been very conservative with the unit since it began showing its needs by slowing down the generator. So we haven't had conventional living after sundown. And when this all comes together our generator use will be relegated to the back seat so to speak which is what the original plan was when we moved here.<br />

As if that weren't enough excitement we had this. Check out that left(right in photo) eye that was the loser in the fight. It is even worse today. Geoffrey managed to get a shingles infection in his optic nerve. It is nothing to be toyed with as everything from blindness to annoying stuff such as debilitating pain are on the list. So he has been down for the count since Wednesday when he finally agreed to a visit to our O.D. who marched him directly to the ophthalmologist office for appropriate care. He is sleeping almost constantly and is very painful still. He is on AB's and eye drops with a follow up appointment next week. The fun never ends at Walnetto Farm!</div>

<br />
This photo is pretty much what it still looks like here on our 42 Acres of Paradise. Sometimes it is a bit worse somewhat like a foggy day in January in the San Joaquin valley of California. Sometimes we see blue sky in places and the last two nights we have had stars again. What have I learned from this Carr fire?<br />
<br />
Much. Somethings about me and my response to it and somethings about my community. What I can say about this situation is it strikes me very much like the journey with cancer. Until you go through it you really can't fully understand it. It like cancer steals from you. Your sense of vulnerability enlarges. Your logical thought can go to pot. And your emotions can ride high and strong. Even if one is on the fringes, as we are, you still are effected by what is whirling around you.<br />
<br />
I have watched my community and friends. Some who have lost their homes and some who have been evacted for week(s) and still don't know if they have a home because the fire flared up again in their area. I see people who are so strong and some who are so stupid. There are always those that will take advantage of others in a precarious situation.<br />
<br />
What I have seen the most of is the best of us. The ones who give all from first responders to volunteers . The quality of those in Shasta county restores faith in my heart. We see so much ugly on a daily basis that it can overshadow the good that still dwells out there. And if what I have seen since July 23 is any indication of it good certainly does out weigh evil. I think that it is evil and drama make a buck for some and sensationalism attracts like minded and keeps it going. Pity.<br />
<br />
So today I did what I imagine a lot of us here did. I cleaned my house. Now most of you know that I would clean my barn over my house any day but I did that yesterday. So today it was house day. I got down and dirty . Did some heavy lifting and cleaned under some things that , well never mind, let's just say it had been awhile. And in the middle of all of it I had an epiphany. I cleaned my house because I can't fight fire.<br />
<br />

<br />
This is a photo of the sky at my house in the week since the Carr Fire began. Yes that ball up top is the sun and yes it is not altered in anyway. It is what we see with our eyes. And please forgive me if I do go on with little diversion about this monstrous fire. This fire that after a week has grown to just shy of 100,000 acres , taken 6 lives including two preschool age children and their great grandmother. And the fire that is now heading into Trinity county just to our west with as much unpredictability and insanity as it began with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Df0rVOplFPQ/W193hUsnDUI/AAAAAAAAEGw/KT9ZZpyhRe8pqcBmKMZTCy-QJez9z45DQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4085.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="459" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Df0rVOplFPQ/W193hUsnDUI/AAAAAAAAEGw/KT9ZZpyhRe8pqcBmKMZTCy-QJez9z45DQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4085.JPG" width="306" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is the map of the fire a day or two ago . The major change would be that the area to the left has crossed the dotted line in front of it entering the next county. Otherwise it is finally somewhat stabilizing and some folks are even repopulating their neighborhoods. Of course in a mountainous terrain such as Shasta county we in general aren't meaning urban type neighborhood. But several of those were involved too and lost in the fight.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is what it looked like driving home from the valley floor on Saturday. It was the same day we had a visit from this sight for sore eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was under this in a cool spot by the river visiting with my sister by phone when it came out of the smoke and I can tell you it takes your breath away. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cB6QT81NR2I/W193gV2K-xI/AAAAAAAAEGo/Wd45iTAntaQaZeoKGG1HhJxvyfrO5-IKACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cB6QT81NR2I/W193gV2K-xI/AAAAAAAAEGo/Wd45iTAntaQaZeoKGG1HhJxvyfrO5-IKACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4081.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As far the critters are doing well as can be expected. Yarrow has been doing some heavy working with Sherman at night. How do I know ? Well that is the other side of the story. I have slept on the deck literally for over a week now. Why? Because we have such an unpleasant inversion layer locked in place above the house cannot cool off because we can't use our cooler. Why? Because we have been having issues with our almost 18 year old solar unit. Part of it is wear and tear , part due to extreme temperatures, part to batteries and panels that need replacing. Even though it wasn't used a lot during its first 12 years of service and we have been here going on seven years , it is an older system. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wW5CahMDp80/W193jayeCPI/AAAAAAAAEG8/NIg94W6mU7ob6-wO5mSE32uYeuxTuJ13ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1289" data-original-width="1600" height="257" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wW5CahMDp80/W193jayeCPI/AAAAAAAAEG8/NIg94W6mU7ob6-wO5mSE32uYeuxTuJ13ACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4089.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So what are we doing? Besides praying for cooler weather? Preparing for our upgraded unit. Geoffrey has been taking down trees for the new panels that will go on the East side of the pump/solar house. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We will be replacing all six of the original units panels. You can see the unit below in the center to the left of the buck pen. Of course that is a stock photo from last winter. We will also be getting two batteries that will weigh in at about 1200 pounds each and will replace the entire bank of 15 smaller units we have now that are on the way out. We also have a few smaller items on the list. We are working with the small local business that put this unit in originally the owner is a super guy well educated in solar as he has been in business since 1971. Yes he is 75 years and still logging 16 hour days in the field. In the end we will an updated unit that will serve us well, push the propane to a backseat (this has been my dream carbon footprint and all you know) and give us a leg up if and when it comes time for us to downsize a bit. I am very excited! Hopeful this will all come together in the next two to three weeks and the apparent cool down headed our way means we can nurse this system along as Geoffrey has already and we can get back our trusty swamp cooler and stop feeling like we live in one. I have managed to drop 6 pounds in the last 12 days between the heat and chores. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I will take photos and keep you updated with the progress. Until then once again I will close with please pray for us in California. I have lived in three counties in this great state and two of them have major blazes in them and other parts of the state. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the Carr Fire. The fire went from approximately 7000 to 20000 acres overnight. It is now on a collision course with Shasta Dam <a href="https://www.usbr.gov/mp/ncao/shasta-dam.html" target="_blank">https://www.usbr.gov/mp/ncao/shasta-dam.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are a large amount of persons fighting like crazy to stop this from happening. It is also potentially headed toward Redding <a href="https://www.cityofredding.org/" target="_blank">https://www.cityofredding.org/</a> there are a large contingent of folks also fighting like crazy to stop this from happening. At this point the possible cause of this fire is vehicle aka trailer. I don't know more than that. I have at least one friend who is evacuated and her elderly mother was released from the hospital at the same time. I cannot begin to imagine.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was our first wildfire the first summer we lived here</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponderosa_Fire" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponderosa_Fire </a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
it was much closer to us about 30 minutes as the crow flies and was almost 28000 acres in the end . This was a lightening strike fire and was just plain evil from the beginning. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is always a potential trade off for living in the area I do. But one can be smart. Defensive space every year at least 200 feet from home and out buildings. More if you can manage. Make wise choices don't use chain saws, target shoot or use weed eaters or do anything on very hot dry days that could potentially cause a spark. Make sure there is nothing dragging from your vehicle or trailer while you are traveling that could cause a spark. And please only burn on burn days and if the burn days are revoked be safe walk away from your ego that tells I've got this because you don't. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some folks think we are crazy living where we do . Being off grid attempting to lower our carbon footprint and do as much for ourselves as we can. But to those of us that do it couldn't be any other way. When I wake up to mornings like this </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3xrSlpEZsXQ/WCKzXvDwSyI/AAAAAAAABkc/6lp9bXzI_0I54OhI9C-xhq39djIZvt6wgCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1049" data-original-width="1600" height="209" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3xrSlpEZsXQ/WCKzXvDwSyI/AAAAAAAABkc/6lp9bXzI_0I54OhI9C-xhq39djIZvt6wgCPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_0378.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
And nights like this </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ykma2RT8EzI/WMTanT3Ed9I/AAAAAAAACPk/lDjzxFW_pLcpY3UBqPw0tGKX_l8JBLOlACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_1243.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1453" data-original-width="1600" height="290" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ykma2RT8EzI/WMTanT3Ed9I/AAAAAAAACPk/lDjzxFW_pLcpY3UBqPw0tGKX_l8JBLOlACPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_1243.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Walk in 42 acres of solace I can't imagine living anywhere else. Seeing deer, turkey, roadrunners hearing coyotes and holding a hummingbird who took a wrong turn and ended up in my greenhouse then watching it fly to the top of pine tree. Those things win out over the risk that is always there. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Life is full of risk heck getting out of bed in the morning holds the potential of tripping over the cat and breaking your neck. Make life full of calculated risk life is way too short to not take calculated chances. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am blessed beyond measure to be able to have this surrounding me. Please send up a prayer for those around me who experiencing the unthinkable today in their lives today with this fire. May California and other states that are experiencing high wildfire rates recover and go on for the love of what it offers. </div>

My sunflowers are becoming more captivating daily. Take for instance this one. It appears to have only bloomed half way. I have no idea why but it most certainly makes for an interesting photo. I have deemed it the Star Trek sunflower. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SN8N0v9gEpM/W1JP0TkeXoI/AAAAAAAAEE0/A0sVzbs-GRkLNqznehEe1YgcdYxgDnBtgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4046.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SN8N0v9gEpM/W1JP0TkeXoI/AAAAAAAAEE0/A0sVzbs-GRkLNqznehEe1YgcdYxgDnBtgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4046.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the group of three that bloomed two days ago. Apparently didn't want to let go of the vegetated string attaching the two sides. If you look closely you can see a honeybee just above the VM string on the right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-toP3J4QDe50/W1JP-7i6m3I/AAAAAAAAEE4/99e1-ddRtr0ulOVXB0wcwGv4KPaOg-XPgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-toP3J4QDe50/W1JP-7i6m3I/AAAAAAAAEE4/99e1-ddRtr0ulOVXB0wcwGv4KPaOg-XPgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4047.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the whole family including five of the group in various stages of blooming and the one in the upper right corner going into the next stage. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Dinner last night. Rice pilaf with wild caught Soho salmon sauteed with fresh squash, mini sweet pepper, mushrooms and sweet red onions. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JoWlORA-nv4/W1JQJVZ7G6I/AAAAAAAAEFA/afLiL1znjsw2hNZn5Je1mrxp216DXFJMwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4049%2B%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JoWlORA-nv4/W1JQJVZ7G6I/AAAAAAAAEFA/afLiL1znjsw2hNZn5Je1mrxp216DXFJMwCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4049%2B%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That was yesterday Thursday. On Wednesday I went over to the Tehama District fair. I was judging for the second year the open senior baked goods. I enjoy this aspect of the fair judging and was through 75% of the divisions having just finished the pie categories. And awarded Best Pie to an amazing out of the blue cranberry pie as "best pie." My thigh tingled. Well the pie was good I mean really good a dark horse in the pie race and not to look at and heft it was going to be "the pie, the best pie". But a thigh tingle? Oh tingle again Oh my iPhone. Slightly relieved I for some reason felt the need to answer the second <strike>tingle</strike>, er, call. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"Terry this is Janet (that would be my neighbor at the cattle ranch ) I don't want to worry you but there is a fire on Ash Creek just down from your property." Oh I think a fire where exactly how bad exactly? The low down was the flames were dancing 35 feet in the air above the pine and oak trees , there were already 4 (which ended in a total of 5) air drops of retardant and as she spoke trucks where arriving. I thanked her and went back to the table. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I informed the ladies at the table clerking and the building superintendent of the situation. There were about four or five divisions with at least 3-6 classes each left. The super offered to finish the judging for me . But I said it won't take that long I will finish. I started to press on in the new division, the super very quietly and calmly said " I can do this for you". Oh that was a new idea and wonderful gesture I thought. Well then if she did that I would sign off on my finished judging sheets and leave. I starred at the half inch thick judging sheets waiting for my signature. Again the super spoke up "I can sigh them for you." "Oh you can?" said I. I picked up my pen and began to sign the first sheet then looking up I asked her "could you do this?" To which she calmly replied "yes". </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then the smoke cleared in my head. Oh my gosh what was I thinking. I was doing what many a client in the veterinary practices had done on hearing what your mind couldn't process. And that dear lady was doing what I had done before quietly , calmly kept repeating until I processed. I was out door after maybe three minutes even though it seemed more. I set a track record for driving home from the fairgrounds. And I took the back way over the mountain in case there were hard closures on more traveled roads to our area. I was worried about not being able to get past a closure leaving me on one side and Geoffrey and the farm on the other.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I need not of worried by the time I got home it was under control and mop up beginning. We were so blessed. The fire remained small, the crews hit it hard and heavy. The afternoon winds that had been blowing everyday for a week were still.Those winds would have whipped that fire to the west with my farm directly in the path. There would most likely have been not much left . Odd the winds picked up about an hour after mop up began. The response team was fast, efficient and through. We are blessed. </div>
